Research Interests

I am a geo- and astrobiologist with a strong interest in early life on Earth. My current research focuses on the emergence of microbial life in the Archean (~3.5 billion years) and the rise of metazoans in the terminal Proterozoic (~635-541 million years).

I reconstruct fossil habitats and ecosystems (i.e. habitability and palecology) by combining sedimentological and paleontological observations with analyses of organic biosignatures (i.e. molecular fossils and their isotopic signatures). As preservational issues commonly hamper these reconstructions, I also investigate the fate of organic materials in younger sediments and rocks (i.e. taphonomy).

For the analysis of organic materials, I use various state-of-the-art techniques, such as catalytic hydropyrolysis (HyPy), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ration mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS).
